Liability Insurance for Nurses

As a nurse, you’re on the front lines of patient care every day. The work is fast-paced, demanding, and deeply meaningful. But even when you do everything right, there’s still a chance of facing a malpractice lawsuit, patient claim, or licensing board complaint.

That’s where nurse liability insurance comes in. It helps protect you if you’re accused of negligence, an error, or a failure to act. Coverage includes legal defense costs and, if needed, settlements or judgments, so one claim doesn’t derail your career or your finances.

Many nurses assume their employer’s insurance is enough. In reality, those policies are written to protect the facility first, not you. Having your own individual policy ensures your interests are front and center. With Proliability, you get affordable coverage designed specifically for nurses, with premiums starting at just $106 for employed RNs.* Association members may also qualify for additional discounts, such as:

  • Attend an approved loss prevention/risk management seminar
  • Hold a certification from AANPCB, ANCC, AACN Certification Corporation, or other recognized bodies
  • Work at a Magnet-designated hospital
  • Work in a unit that has received the Beacon Award for Excellence

Protection When You Need It Most

Also called professional liability or malpractice insurance, this coverage steps in when a patient or family member files a claim against you. It helps protect both your finances and your license. Proliability policies typically include:

  • Legal defense costs: An attorney dedicated to representing you, with defense costs paid in addition to your liability limits.
  • Settlements or judgments: Payment for damages up to your policy limits.
  • Licensing board complaints: Attorney fees covered if you need to defend your license.
  • HIPAA violations: Support for fines or penalties related to alleged privacy breaches.
  • Portable coverage: Protection that follows you from job to job, even if you change employers, roles, or states.

The goal is simple: you don’t face the financial or emotional burden of a claim alone.

Why Nurses Need Malpractice Insurance

Every nurse, whether you’re in a hospital, school, clinic, or traveling assignment, can be named in a malpractice claim. Claims may arise from medication errors, documentation issues, patient falls, or even simple misunderstandings. Employer coverage often doesn’t go far enough. Your own policy means you’re not left vulnerable. It’s about more than protecting your paycheck — it’s about safeguarding your license, your reputation, and your peace of mind.

Employer Coverage vs. Individual Coverage Comparison

Many nurses are surprised by how limited their employer’s coverage is. Here’s a quick comparison:
